Video Installation
In the public domain, expressions of emotion are conventionally kept private, however there are many contemporary textual art practices that explore this. My practice draws on personal narratives of loss and trauma, reframing these experiences into language based works in order to explore how to articulate repressed memories and emotions through word and image. The work has a particular interest in processes of fragmentation in relation to personal narrative and memory. Through the use of video installation, the work aims to highlight a tension between how public and private experiences are narrated. The constructed text in the work is presented by means of subtitles, which further references modes of communication and creates a consciousness of the process of reading and the immediacy that is inherent in a time-based video medium. The work aims to simultaneously draw an emotional connection with the viewer whilst imposing an immanent disconnect through the use of fragmented narrative.
